    Temperatures rise to 40°C
    Wednesday, 20 March 2002

Heatwave conditions across the Hunter have resulted in the hottest March day since 1965 as recorded at Williamtown. Yesterday the temperatures across a widespread area were in the 38 - 40C range, with Jerrys Plains recording the highest temp of 39.9C. Neighbouring regions also got hit hard with the hot weather. Taree recorded a top temperature of 41.4C while Tamworth reached 38C.

The heatwave started on Sunday the 17th with temperatures reaching the mid 30's. Last night temperatures in the Upper Hunter were very abnormally high with Murrurundi recording a 24 hour minima to 9am of 24.0C, which is 11.3C above average. At this time it is uncertain whether this is the highest March minima ever recorded for Murrurundi.
