Temperatures rise to 40°C
Wednesday, 20 March 2002
Heatwave
conditions across the Hunter have resulted in the hottest March day since
1965 as recorded at Williamtown. Yesterday the temperatures across a widespread area
were in the 38 - 40°C range, with Jerrys Plains recording the highest
temp of 39.9°C. Neighbouring regions also got hit hard with the hot
weather. Taree recorded a top temperature of 41.4°C while Tamworth
reached 38°C. The
heatwave started on Sunday the 17th with temperatures reaching the mid
30's. Last night temperatures in the Upper Hunter were very
abnormally high with Murrurundi recording a 24 hour minima to
9am of 24.0°C, which is 11.3°C above average. At this time it is
uncertain whether this is the highest March minima ever recorded for
Murrurundi.
