Coldest September day since 1997
Monday, 5 September 2005
Low maximum temperatures were recorded yesterday in the Hunter, making it one
of the coldest September days since 1997. Conditions throughout the day were
cloudy with occasional showers and drizzle. The 24 hour maximum temperatures in
the Lower Hunter were 13 or 14°C at most locations. These temperatures were
typically 8 - 9°C below average. The Upper Hunter experienced
slightly higher maximums due to the slightly sunnier conditions.
Despite the low maximum temperatures, snow did not occur on
any of the ranges. This was because the air mass was of sub-tropical origin and
therefore the lower troposphere was too warm and moist to support any snow.
The recent rain and cool daytime temperatures of yesterday are in contrast
with the mild and dry August that was experienced throughout the Hunter. August
2005 ended as the driest August since 1995 and the mildest since 2002. back...
