Weather Photos >> Floods >> Morpeth area, NSWMorpeth area, NSW 8-11 August 1998
Even though the rain was not all that heavy between the period of the 5 to the 8th, it still was enough to cause major flooding in the Lower Hunter. The winter of 1998 was very abnormally wet, which followed a very wet May. The ground held a lot of moisture and so therefore the run off was very extensive in the lower and upper catchments of the Hunter, Paterson and Williams Rivers. Most areas in the Hunter did not receive anymore then 120mm of rain in the 72 hour period. The Morpeth area, where most of the photos were taken below, received between 75 - 100mm in the 72 hours. The flooding was only minor in the upper catchments, but was major in the lower catchments. River heights were typical of a 1 in 20 year flood around Maitland, Paterson, Seaham, Clarence Town and Raymond Terrace. Much of the floodwaters remained for over a week.
