Bushfires hit western Lake Macquarie
Tuesday, 26 November 2002
Bushfires have
stuck again in the Hunter, this time hitting the western parts of Lake
Macquarie. For the last three days, much of the Hunter has recorded temperatures
higher then 35°C, relative humidity as low as 5% and fresh to strong WNW winds.
The bushfires started on the F3 freeway near Killingworth and travelled SE. The
smoke was visible at many locations in the Lower Hunter.
The heatwave
conditions brought with it the hottest November temperatures for five years in
the Lower Hunter. Yesterday Cessnock (Nulkaba) recorded 40.5 C, Tocal 40.7 C,
Maitland 40.5 C and Williamtown 38.5 C. Today the temperatures were only
slightly cooler.
