Record Temperatures: September Scorcher
Thursday, 25 September 2003
Most weather stations across the Hunter recorded either there highest maximum or minimum
temperatures ever for September in the last 3 days. Fresh to strong west north-west
winds were responsible for a heatwave that started on Monday (22/9). The heat
was very unseasonable and the heatwave experienced is more common in late
October early November. The daytime temperatures were mostly in the mid 30's
across the Hunter on Monday and Tuesday. Overnight and morning temperatures
were also very warm to hot with Tocal recording 28.7°C at 6am on Tuesday morning
(23/9), making it the highest 6am temperature ever record in New South Wales for
September. Because the relative humidity was low and the winds were fresh to
strong, the fire danger was extreme for most of the period.
New records set for daily max and daily high min temperatures for selected
stations in the Hunter
