Wet September for coastal areas
Friday, 1 October 2004
September rainfall totals on the coastal areas in the Hunter were the highest
since September 1998. A large proportion of this rain in Newcastle and Port
Stephens fell in a 24 hour period ending 9am Monday the 20th. This was due to
the thunderstorm activity on Sunday the 19th. Williamtown recorded a total for
the month of 90mm, Newcastle University 159.8mm, Nobbys Head 84mm, Nelson Bay
110mm and Norah Head 140mm. Majority of these values were 15mm or more above the
long term averages.
The Upper Hunter did not receive the falls for September like the coastal areas
with Scone only receiving 15mm. Maitland and the surrounding districts recorded
average to slightly below average rainfall for the month of September.
