    Extreme heat strikes again
    Thursday, 2 February 2006

Heatwave conditions were experienced throughout the Hunter Region, with Jerrys Plains recording a 24 hour maximum of 45.5°C. This maximum was the highest daily Febraury maximum since records begun at Jerrys Plains in 1957 and is officially the highest February maximum ever recorded in the Hunter Region. Further more, it was only 0.1°C below Jerrys Plains highest maximum ever of 45.6°C which was set on Christmas day 1957.

Singleton also recorded its highest February temperature while Cessnock (Nulkaba), Murrurundi and Scone recorded their highest temperatures since records begun for each station.

Even though a large area of the Hunter experienced extreme temperatures, the maximum's were overall slightly lower then the extreme heat that was experienced on New Years Day. Jerrys Plains did not report a maximum temperature on New Years Day, however, Singleton recorded a maximum of 45.9°C on that day. Singleton recorded a maximum of 44.5°C today, exactly 1°C lower then Jerrys Plains maximum.

The weather conditions were sunny and dry throughout the day. The winds were light and variable throughout much of the Hunter. A southerly change that hit the region late afternoon/early evening dissipated the heat.
